Priyanjoli Basu – Founder Of Priyanjoli

We live in a modern world that offers us an abundance of choice and convenience. It’s easy to shop cheap, fast fashion. And, it’s easy to shop often. But, the choice is also there to shop slow, ethically, and sustainably. Slow Fashion is not your typical seasonal fashion trend, it is a movement that is steadily gaining momentum and is likely here to stay. I am talking about slow fashion as I got inspired by a Chennai based designer, Priyanjoli invited us for an open studio in her boutique.

I was very much excited to attend it as Priyanjoli is a niche clothing label that celebrates both handloom and the modern woman. Priyanjoli collaborates with clusters of weavers and artisans to create exclusive designs and texture. Priyanjoli Basu, Founder & Lead Designer Priyanjoli Basu was born in Kolkata into a family of empowered women who are passionate about heritage textile. and studied fashion and design at the London College of Fashion. The slow fashion label is doing this by bridging the gap between traditional techniques and the constant evolution of modern fabric.Sustainable fashion is often concerned with the environmental impact. Opting for fibers and materials that are organic, recycled, or repurposed, limiting harmful chemicals/dyes, reducing energy/water usage and waste, and overall choosing low-impact options wherever possible.

About the store :

They strongly believe in the ‘beauty of handmade’. Their store is full of attractive handmade things like ceiling, hand-painted cupboard and much more I totally love the ambiance. The best part about the label is the fact that they offer personalized client services. They make every woman experience a completely personalized one. This means that women of all sizes can wear a Priyanjoli creation… Isn’t did great ?? They also offer a reverse pick up and alteration service, in case of any further alterations.

Priyanjoli Basu shares her story
“…that she loves textiles, In the beginning, it was a fast fashion picking up clothes from different stores also working with designer making wedding clothes but she realized there weren’t good everyday clothes made out of textiles that we make in India. So she went to study in London came back to India . So the entire time between London and India she realized, that this is what she loves doing she like textiles and she not only like fashion but she likes the whole process os textile making so she decided to have a brand.
She started with a very clear chain of people working with her because she started realizing what kind of harmful effect clothing, manufacturing was doing to the planet and she was passionate about the cause. So she wanted to create something in clothing which will not affect the future of her child as well the future of the planet. So she started working mostly with people who needed support, who did not have the knowledge to change designs, capacity to evolve from where they wear to global market, so she started creating her own brand where they have handloom textiles, apparels, sarees, tops, skirts, dresses, pants and much more. She started the store with the idea of custom tailoring. to be able to meet women who come and tell what they like and what would look nice on them, she could change her mind by making her try something who really fits her. As she is from Kolkata she started working with weavers from Bengal and created a weavers community in Bengal where she empowered with technology, teaching them how to use WhatsApp and take pictures so that they can send it to me that the production is done would you like to change colors. I started teaching them ways to communicate, not just with me but also with other vendors which are really helping them. So this becomes a very interesting educational program for her to start teaching and communicating… To maintain these fashion projects we had a store named Priyanjoli and now it has been seven years online too. But the idea was, we wanted to be a household synonymously named with the word sustainable and ethical. This was one of the key reasons that we started the brand and the business. Keeping that as a philosophy, we created handwoven textiles that impact the planet giving good products packed without using plastic. However, our main motto is, Source from local weaver and create transparency from textiles to garments.”

As we can see their focus is on woven textiles with simple and contemporary aesthetics – giving way to global design.
You can also select a ready-made design by taking a look at their size chart (from petite up to Size 16). They also offer a reverse pick up and alteration service, in case of any further alterations. Though Priyanjoli does plenty of basics like casual tops, which are perfect to wear to work and some informal jackets, it is their ikat dresses collection that has caught our eye. Though the label is definitely not budget, but if u love environment you can give it a try…
